Silesian Museum

In the 2014 it was 200 years since the first public museum was established in the territory of today's Czech Republic. It was established on the grammar school grounds inside the former Jesuit College. One of the supporters of the museum was beside of members of the representatives of the business class also Opava prince Jan II. from Liechtenstein. He provided part of his land for the purpose of building a new exhibition building.
The layout of a double-storeyed neo-Renaissance building was meant to refer to the Viennese Art and Industrial Museum. The richly decorated facade of the exhibition building is divided into a huge avant-corps with a staircase, two loggias above each other and ending with a dome on a polygonal tambourine.

Silesian Theater

The first reports of theater performance in Opava date back to 1630 however the building of the Silesian Theater dates back to the early 19th century. Originally a classicist building has undergone significant intervention in the Neo-Renaissance style at the end of the 19th century. The interior was influenced by F. Moser after an extensive fire in 1909. After the World War II, the exterior of the building was stripped of its historicist appearance. The return to the Neo-Renaissance style was followed by reconstruction in the early 1990s and reconstruction and upgrading of the facilities in 2011.

Our Lady of the Assumption Co-Cathedral

The Co-Cathedral is the most important Gothic monument in Opava. It was built by the Teutonic Order in the 14th century. The building is an example of Silesian Gothic, which is recognizable simply by red bricks and stone details. The vaults of the ship and the interior of the church were baroque after the fire of the church in 1758. The church was declared a national cultural monument in 1995. Since 1996 it has been declared as the second settlement of the Bishop of Ostrava-Opava diocese (co-cathedral).

Town Tower Hláska

Hláska's building was built on the site of an older wooden tower and it dates to the beginnings of 17th century. The construction around the tower was demolished at the beginning of the 20th century. A new building was built here and now it serves as a city office. Tower Hláska is a high dominante of the historical city center and the view from it offers a very interesting view almost to the whole Opava city.

Müller's House

The house was built in 1726. It was originally the home of the administrator of the Lichtenstein castle. It was built on the foundations of the Opava castle of Přemyslids. This freestanding building with honeycomb roof is the only one reminder of the castle area. The building now belongs to the Silesian Land Museum, The museum plans to reconstruct the entire building and to make it accessible to its visitors.

Chapel of St. Crosses - Swedish Chapel

Přemek I. Opavský let at the very end of the 14th century build a representative sanctuary on a small hill on an important trade route leading to Ratiboř. It was meant to demonstrate the high position of the duke in the city. The chapel has an unusual octagonal ground plan. It was originally probably a type of ruler's palace chapel, which was probably the example of a Prague church in Karlov whose closest analogy we would find in Reichenbach in Silesia (Poland). The last restoration work was completed in 1996. The chapel was registered among the national cultural monuments and was also made available to the public in 1996 too.

You can also make a trip to nearby surroundings, for example the castle in Raduň or castle in Hradec nad Moravicí. Both of these castles are surrounded by beautiful nature. Chateau parks invite you for pleasant walks and discovering.
